NY State Regulates CA Flow Rates for Urinals, Showerheads, Lavatories, and Kitchen Faucets – Effective June 26, 2023

Product flow rates are important in the plumbing world, especially regarding current environmental initiatives. To stay up to date with these latest developments, the consumer needs to be aware of code changes to comply with standards, complete projects, and maintain efficiency. ICC NTA offers numerous tests to evaluate flow rates, ensuring that our clients remain in compliance.

Recently, New York has changed their plumbing tests as part of a bill passed in December 2022. These new stipulations concern kitchen faucets, showerheads, water closets, and urinals. The initiative states that product flow rates should be tested to reduce water usage and increase energy efficiency. Additionally, these only apply to products made after the new initiative goes into effect. Any product made as of June 2023 will be required to be tested under these new procedures.

Evaluating the Flow Rate of Kitchen Faucets, Showerheads, Water Closets, and Urinals:

In assessing flow rates, experts use standards such as ASME A112.18.1 or ASME A112.19.2, which evaluate properties such as:

  • Kitchen Faucet flow rates (A112.18.1)
  • Showerhead flow rates (A112.18.1)
  • Urinal flow rates (A112.19.2)
  • Water Closet flow rates (A112.19.2)

The NTA plumbing lab can conduct flow rate tests under the ASME A112.18.1 and ASME A112.19.2 standards
