Structural Insulated Panel Certification

SIPs were added to the International Residential Code, or IRC, in 2009. The code specifies applicability limits and production materials (core, facing, adhesive, lumber, screws, and nails). In the 2018, Section R610 requires that all structural insulated panels be manufactured under a quality control program verified by an approved third-party quality assurance agency. Each structural insulated panel must be identified by a certificate of inspection or grade mark issued by the approved agency to ensure code compliance. Following the introduction of SIPs to the IRC, NTA partnered with the Structural Insulation Panel Association, or SIPA, to design a comprehensive certification code report for their members.

What NTA can do
NTA is accredited by A2LA, as a product certification agency in accordance with ISO/IEC 17065 for SIPs. We can issue a report showing code compliance for your structural insulated panel. While the IRC covers only SIPs used in walls, with a thickness of 4-1/2 or 6-1/2 inches and a span of 8 to 12 feet, NTA can provide alternate certification for SIPs used in floors and roofing, as well as spans exceeding 12 feet.

The NTA SIPs program is highly customizable. We work with and certify SIPs that utilize a variety of facing, core materials, and adhesive bonding systems. We offer additional code compliance testing and certification for:

  • SIPs intended for use in basements or single-family residential homes

  • Headers and openings: windows and doors
  • Seismic resistance
  • Wind resistance
  • Fire-rated assemblies

NTA program advantages:

Unlike some accredited product certification agencies, NTA is also an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited testing lab, fully qualified to run its own testing. And while some labs need time to study and interpret SIP guidelines, NTA knows the scheme documents because we wrote our own. When a client comes to us with a need, we know exactly what to do to meet it. As a result, NTA can complete the certification process from start to finish in as little as three months.

NTA’s report presents a more comprehensive picture than other SIP programs. Most reports include tables of spans and thicknesses and loads. Ours has that, but it also has a special table of design properties, including shear modulus, comprehensive strength, and more. No other SIPs evaluation report has that. We’ve made our evaluation reports friendly for designers, engineers, and code officials alike. In fact, we’ve created a SIP engineered design guide.

We’re quick to adapt or evolve our program to suit the unique needs of building product manufacturers. What if you need to certify your product for something not currently covered by a program? Other evaluation companies would need to hire someone to rewrite the program and submit the new section for a lengthy review process. Not so with NTA. If you know how you want to use your product, we can work with you to quickly design new areas to incorporate into our testing.
