Heavy timber framing differs from traditional, dimensional stick-built, post-and-beam, or log construction methods. Rather than using small, dimensional lumber, it utilizes mortise and tenon joints to secure large interlocking timbers with wooden pegs. This method has proven to be an effective means of construction for barns and similar structures, but it comes with some unique design considerations. To make heavy timber design even more efficient, some builders use structural insulated panels (SIPs) because they are already insulated and assemble quickly. SIPs allow the heavy timber frame to be visible from the inside of the structure while maintaining its energy efficiency.
