California voted to adopt the 2017 National Electrical Code

On January 15-16, 2019 meeting, the California Building Standards Commission voted to adopt the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC), 2018 Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes, 2018 International Existing Building Code, and the California Green Building Code (CALGreen). At their December 4-5, 2018​ meeting, adopted the 2018 International Building, Residential and Fire Codes. These model codes with California amendments comprise the 2019 California Building Standards Code, Title 24, and California Code of Regulations. These adopted codes will be published on July 1, 2019, and after a 180-day statutorily required waiting period, will become effective on January 1, 2020.

2019 Building Energy Efficiency Standards. California’s Building Energy Efficiency Standards are updated on an approximately three-year cycle. The 2019 Standards will continue to improve upon the 2016 Standards for new construction of, additions and alterations to, residential and nonresidential buildings. The 2019 Standards will go into effect on January 1, 2020.
