South Carolina Adoption of Mandatory Codes
August 30, 2022

On October 6, 2021, the South Carolina Building Codes Council adopted the latest editions of the mandatory codes and appendices with modifications, as referenced in S.C. Code Ann. §6-9-50 (1976, as amended), to be enforced by all municipalities and counties in South Carolina. The Council established the implementation date for local jurisdictions as January 1, 2023. Important Dates ENERGY STAR Tax Credit
January 31, 2020

As you may be aware, late last year Congress extended the $1,000 tax credit for each ENERGY STAR home completed through 2020 and made the credit retroactive to include homes completed in 2018 and 2019. During this period, we launched Version 2 of the ENERGY STAR requirements. SBRA is currently developing program rules that will apply to Version 2 homes. South Carolina 2018 Building Codes: In Effect January 1, 2020

On August 22, 2018, the South Carolina Building Codes Council adopted the latest editions of the mandatory codes referenced in S.C. Code Ann. §6-9-50 (1976, as amended), along with modifications to these codes and appendices.  The updated mandatory codes, including modifications, must be enforced by all municipalities and counties in South Carolina beginning on January 1, 2020.  Therefore, modular plans and label applications received after this date must conform with the mandatory codes listed below: (more…)

South Carolina’s adoption of the 2018 Building Codes

The 2018 South Carolina Building Codes have been adopted by the Building Codes Council, and the modifications to the Codes have been approved by the South Carolina General Assembly. The list of code modifications can be accessed HERE. The Codes with their modifications will go into effect on January 1, 2020. The mandatory building codes adopted for use in South Carolina and which must be enforced by all municipalities and counties beginning January 1, 2020 include:

South Carolina Building Codes Staffing Change
October 24, 2018

NTA recently received an email from the SC Building Codes Council, SC Manufactured Housing Board introducing Maggie Castles, who will be inheriting the job title and responsibilities of Jennie Meade after her retirement at the end of this calendar year. Any correspondence and/or plans should be addressed to both Jennie and Maggie until Jennie’s retirement. The state was able to lure Maggie away from the Residential Builders Commission after two years with that board. She is working on (more…)

Habitable Attic Egress Requirements

Please be aware of the definition and egress requirements of a habitable attic as it relates to dwellings built from the 2012 IRC. The 2009 and 2015 IRC verbiage is similar and still applicable. Attics that meet the size and ceiling height criteria of the “Habitable Attic” definition in Chapter 2 are considered habitable. This is applicable to finished and unfinished spaces. Habitable attics require a vertical access and emergency escape and rescue opening. Vertical access can be a fixed internal stair, ramp, or exterior stair. (more…)

South Carolina Building Codes Council intends to adopt the 2018 version of the building codes

The South Carolina Building Codes Council intends to adopt the 2018 version of the building codes and the 2017 NEC for use in the state of South Carolina. South Carolina A117.1 Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings is available for use

The 2017 version of A117.1, Standard for Accessible and Usable Buildings is available for use and currently applicable in the state of South Carolina. Upon further review of the new edition of the code, significant changes were discovered. Many sections were separated into categories for Existing Buildings and New Buildings. The New Buildings sections now require larger sizes for circular turning spaces, T-shaped turning spaces, wheelchair space, etc.  Please take note of the changes in this code addition, (more…)

South Carolina Building Codes announces the 2017 edition of ANCI A117.1
