On August 26, 2025, the South Carolina Building Codes Council adopted the latest editions of the mandatory codes and select appendices with modifications, as referenced in S.C. Code Ann. §6-9-50 (1976, as amended), to be enforced by all municipalities and counties in South Carolina.
The adopted mandatory codes are as follows:
2024 Edition of the International Building Code with modifications1
2024 Edition of the International Residential Code with modifications2
2024 Edition of the International Fire Code with modifications 3
2024 Edition of the International Plumbing Code with modifications 4
2024 Edition of the International Mechanical Code with modifications 5
2024 Edition of the International Fuel Gas Code with modifications 6
2023 Edition of the National Electrical Code with modifications
The Council established the implementation date for local jurisdictions as January 1, 2027.
The mandatory codes listed above are to be used in conjunction with the latest code modifications approved by the Council. Only the modifications approved and listed on the Council’s website are valid for use in the State.
Also, on September 18, 2026, South Carolina adopted the 2026 ANSI A117.1 Accessibility Code.
